Periodontology deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases of the tooth socket. When affected by this disease, the alveolar bone will recede, the periodontal (gum) pockets will increase, and in all, the root will have less support. Periodontitis forms due to plaque, genetic factors, smoking and stress.
